Old Frisian:
Kinship

Information

The dataset Old Frisian: Kinship, created by Rita van de Poel and Sander Stolk, is a set of Old Frisian lexical items that belong to the semantic field of kinship. These lexical items (i.e., entries and their senses) have been positioned in the taxonomy of A Thesaurus of Old English (see here) through referencing the relevant IRIs. The taxonomy of the thesaurus has been expanded with specialized concepts specific to the medieval Frisian culture where necessary. The resulting dataset can be browsed as a textual thesaurus within the web application Evoke and thus facilitates comparative research in this specific field for Old Frisian and Old English.

The Old Frisian lexical items found in the dataset are based on the following lexicographic work:

  • Hofmann, D. and A. T. Popkema, eds., Altfriesisches Handwörterbuch (Heidelberg: Universitätsverlag Winter, 2008)

The rationale behind this dataset is described in:

  • Rita van de Poel and Sander Stolk, “A Case of Kinship: Onomasiological Explorations of Kinship in Old Frisian and Old English”, in Exploring Early Medieval English Eloquence: A Digital Humanities Approach with A Thesaurus of Old English and Evoke, eds.
